C-stores, liquor & tobacco
C-stores and liquor have the highest-volume, lowest-margin counter in retail. State compliance, EBT acceptance, age verification, and lottery all need to work at the speed of a 30-second transaction. Xray sets up convenience accounts that survive the audit, the rush, and the inevitable carded teenager.
Why generic processing fails Convenience & Liquor.
EBT/SNAP rules that change yearly
Eligible items, FNS rules, error correction — most processors don't handle SNAP correctly and you eat the rejections.
Margin death from interchange
On an $8 average ticket, $0.10 in flat fees alone is 1.25%. The wrong plan ruins you.
Carded sale gone wrong
Compliance fines for alcohol sales to minors are brutal. The terminal has to enforce the check, not the teenage cashier.
Lottery and scratchers that don't reconcile
Lottery sales, redemptions, and commissions live on a separate machine that nobody balances.
What Xray actually configures for Convenience & Liquor.
Native EBT/SNAP routing
Eligible items auto-tagged, EBT card runs separately from credit, USDA-compliant receipt printed automatically.
Cash discount program
Cash gets a 3.99% discount printed clearly on the shelf and receipt; card price stays at the menu price. Net rate drops below 1%.
ID-required cashier lock
Alcohol/tobacco SKUs require ID scan or manual override with employee PIN — every override logged for the audit.
Lottery integration
Sales, redemptions, and commissions tracked on the same POS — daily balance sheet matches Lottery Commission to the penny.

What it looks like on a Tuesday.
5pm rush: customer brings a six-pack, a lottery ticket, and chips to the counter. Cashier scans the chips and beer, the terminal prompts for ID — cashier scans the customer's license, age is confirmed (24), green check. Lottery sale runs through the integrated ticket, EBT card pays for the chips, the customer's debit card pays for the rest. Whole thing takes 38 seconds. Cash discount line shows clearly on the receipt: "$1.27 saved if you'd paid cash."
Why generic processors fall short.
Big processors price c-stores like restaurants — same flat percentage. They don't configure EBT properly (you have to call support every time a customer tries to use it), and they have no idea what your state lottery commission looks like. We've worked with c-store operators in 12 states; we know the gotchas.
The actual math.
A c-store doing $1.2M/year with a $7 average ticket runs roughly 170,000 transactions. At "flat 2.6% + $0.10" that's $31,200 + $17,000 = $48,200 in fees — 4% effective. Move to cash discount + interchange-plus and we routinely take effective rates below 1.5%, saving $30K/year. Cash discount alone can recapture $15-25K depending on cash mix.
Convenience & Liquor questions, straight answers.
Will cash discount upset my customers?
It's standard at c-stores nationwide now. The shelf tag shows both prices clearly. Studies show 92% of customers don't change their payment behavior — and the 8% who switch to cash save you 1.5% on those sales.
How does EBT work?
The terminal recognizes EBT cards on swipe/tap and only accepts payment for SNAP-eligible items in the basket. Ineligible items must be paid via a different tender. USDA-compliant receipt prints automatically.
Can I sell beer/wine/liquor compliantly?
Yes — the system requires ID verification (scan or manager PIN) before allowing the sale to ring up. Every override is logged.
What about fuel?
We work with PDI and Petrosoft for fully integrated forecourt/inside reconciliation. Single point of sale, single batch.
